Cancer Pain

70% of patients with advanced cancer experience pain as a symptom. The pain may be due to the cancer itself, where the tumour involves the soft tissue, bones, nerves or organs, or it may be due to the treatment for the cancer such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.

Depending on the condition of the patient, cancer pain is treated with

medications to control the pain
chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy
surgery
Medications used to treat cancer pain include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), morphine and morphine-like medications, as well as other medications such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants and steroids.

Cancer pain can be easily controlled in over 90% of patients with advanced cancer. The use of morphine is common and poses no risk of addiction when used for cancer pain. In fact, morphine is the best form of treatment for relieving cancer pain when used under medical supervision.

As cancer pain is unique to each patient, you need to describe how you feel to your doctors and nurses. Be honest and specific so that they can choose the right medication for you to achieve effective pain relief.
